Time. Time is such an important part of our lives, whether it be keeping us on time, assigning a time, making time, or being able to do the things that we want in order to live a productive, happy, healthy life.

One of the things that seems to dissipate is TIME when you are running a business! Particularly if you have employees, you have a really big order that’s coming in or you’ve been provided an opportunity that might take a little bit of extra time to fulfil compared to what usual.

When we talk about how to stay active, when managing a business, it can be really difficult to find time and schedule it. Then still make sure that you’re able to complete the items which make your business run, which bring you income, bring your employee’s income without sacrificing you and your health in order to do that.

So I have 5 tips to stay active when managing a business.

1. Have a diary and schedule in your time.

Scheduling absolutely everything from meetings, when you’re having breakfast, what time you have all the things that are non-negotiable. What are the things that must be done? What can you offload to someone or hand off to somebody else or find a quicker way of doing it to free up some of your time?  Then find out what time you have available to be able to do your physical activity. There is always going to be time. Maybe, it’s when you dropped the kids off to do their exercise, that instead of sitting in the car, answering emails, you get out for that half hour and go for a walk around the oval. What is something that you could do that’s easy and only takes a few minutes?

2. Have a standup desk.

Having a standup desk has shown that you’re more likely to be active throughout the day compared to when you are seated at a desk all day.

3. Do little incidental bits of exercise throughout the day.

This could be as simple as 10 Sit to stands when you’re finished with a phone call. You get off the phone, you stand up and you do 10 squats or 10 sit to stands, or maybe even 10 push-ups off the wall or the floor.

4. Make it manageable.

If you’re someone that is already managing a business, but you’re looking to get into physical activity or be more active, don’t start with the “I’m going to run 20 kilometers each week,” because it’s just not going to happen. It might for the rare few that have got a great mindset like that, but a lot of us will find that it might work for a few weeks and then will be back off it and it’ll take us another 12 months to get back into that physical activity routine. So, make it specific, make it measurable, make it achievable, make it realistic, set a time and pencil it into that calendar.

5. Allow the activity that you choose to be FUN!

Being active will help you be a better business owner, being able to manage your time better and be more productive for the time that you are at work. So whatever that is that you’re doing to be active, make sure that you find it enjoyable, whether it be going for a walk, going for a ride, playing touch footy with the kids, whatever it is, make it fun.
